Half-Staff Alert for January 3, 2017

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags to be lowered to half-staff today, Jan. 3, on all state buildings and within the state Capitol complex in honor of Fred A. Newton, Sr., a captain with the Somerset Township Fire Department and EMS, who died Tuesday, Dec. 27.

“Fred was a devoted firefighter and will be remembered for his service and commitment to his community. I send my deepest condolences to his family, friends and community during this difficult time,” Snyder said.

Newton worked for the Ford Motor Co. in Livonia for 31 years, retiring in 2003. He also served on the Liberty Township Fire Department for 18 years and was a captain and EMT for the Somerset Township Fire Department for eight years.

A service in his honor will take place at 2 p.m. today at the Somerset Beach Campground Fieldhouse located at 9822 Brooklawn Ct. in Somerset Center.

This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2013-10. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff. Flags should be returned to full staff on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
