Half-Staff Alert for November 14, 2016
For Michigan

LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the state capitol complex to be lowered to half-staff on Monday, Nov. 14, in honor of former state Sen. Earl Nelson and former state Rep. Jan Dolan, who both died Tuesday, Nov. 1.

“Earl and Jan were both dedicated public servants who worked hard to ensure the success of their districts. I send my deepest condolences to their family, friends and communities,” Snyder said.

Jan Dolan served 14 years on the Farmington Hills City Council. She was elected in 1989 to the Michigan House of Representatives where she especially advocated for children and the elderly. She was also committed to creating opportunities for women in politics through her work with League of Women Voters and American Association of University Women.

Earl Nelson was a teacher in the Lansing School district before serving 8 years in the Michigan Legislature as a state representative and a senator. He later was the Director of Equity for the State Department of Education. He founded the Earl Nelson singers and was an ordained minister, serving the Oasis Ministry in Florida during retirement.

A service in honor of Nelson will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, at Hawk Hollow Chapel, 15101 Chandler Road in Bath Township.

A service in honor of Dolan will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, at First Presbyterian Church of Farmington, 26165 Farmington Road in Farmington Hills.

This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2013-10. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
