Governor Kristi Noem today ordered that flags be flown at half-staff statewide from sunrise until sundown on Friday, June 19, 2020, in honor of Sioux Falls Fire Captain Kendall Ward, who passed away after battling cancer.
According to the International Association of Firefighters, “Cancer continues to be the leading cause of death among firefighters.” Captain Ward’s funeral will be held in Sioux Falls on June 19th, and his name will be placed on the Firefighter Memorial in Colorado Springs, CO.
**When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the Half-Staff or Half-Mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
