Governor Mills Directs Flags Lowered in Honor of Maine National Guardsman Thomas Small

Governor Janet Mills today directed that the United States flag and the State of Maine flag at all Maine National Guard Facilities be flown at half-staff from sunrise on Saturday, March 2, 2019 to sunset on Sunday, March 3, 2019 in honor of Technical Sergeant Thomas Arthur Morrison Small of North Berwick. Governor Mills also directed the United States flag and the State of Maine flag be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sunday, March 3, 2019 in the towns of North Berwick and South Berwick.

"Technical Sergeant Small was a devoted patriot who served our state and nation honorably for nearly three decades," said Governor Janet Mills. "While we can never fully repay our National Guardsmen for their service, this weekend we will show our gratitude by honoring him, and I hope people across Maine will join me in thanking his family for his service."

Thomas Arthur Morrison Small, age 49 at the time of his passing, graduated from Waterville High School in 1987 and joined the United States Air Force. Technical Sergeant Small served his country for over 28 years and was deployed to the United Arab Emirates Persian Gulf, to Iraq and to Afghanistan twice. Technical Sergeant Small was employed with the United States Postal Service for over ten years and was a member of the Maine Air National Guard. He passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 13, 2019.

All United States flags and State of Maine flags should be flown at full-staff after sunset, Sunday March 3, 2019.

**When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
