For Maine Only
Governor Paul R. LePage has directed all State of Maine flags in the City of Augusta be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, November 2, 2018 in memory of U.S. Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient Sgt. Jack Stearns. Stearns passed away October 21, at the VA Maine Healthcare System in Togus.
Please note: State of Maine flags are to be lowered in Augusta only. If the Maine State and United States flags are flown on the same staff, it is appropriate to affix the Maine State flag with a black ribbon to denote mourning in lieu of lowering.
Sgt. Stearns served with the U.S. Army Rangers during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954, and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and was awarded the Purple Heart after being shot by a sniper. He later worked as a pipefitter and was a member of UA Local 716 Plumbers and Pipefitters. He also served as a deputy for the Kennebec County Sheriff's Department for 15 years.
An active advocate for veterans throughout his life, Stearns was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Grand Lodge of Masons, Shriners International and the Elks Lodge. He served on the Board of Directors for the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery. In 2007, Stearns received the State of Maine Silver Star Honorable Service Medal.
Services for Stearns will be held at noon on Friday November 2 at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta.
**When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
