PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard ordered flags at the South Dakota State Capitol to be flown at half-staff from 8 a.m. until sunset on Tuesday, Oct. 30, to honor the life of former state legislator Michael J. O’Connor, of Brandon, on the day of his funeral.
O’Connor served in the State House of Representatives from 1971 to 1972 and the State Senate from 1973 to 1977 and 1981 to 1982. He was the State Senate’s President Pro Tempore in 1975-76 and the chamber’s assistant minority leader in 1977.
In 1982, O’Connor was the Democratic nominee for Governor of South Dakota. He also served on the Minnehaha County Commission.
A memorial service for O’Connor will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. CST at Miller Southside Chapel, located at 7400 S. Minnesota Avenue in Sioux Falls.
The O’Connor family has asked that memorials be directed to Friends of South Dakota Public Broadcasting.
**When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
