For Kentucky Only
Gov. Matt Bevin has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff Friday, June 8, 2018, from sunrise to sunset, in honor of Cpl. Ernest L.R. Heilman, 19, a Greenup, Kentucky soldier who was captured and killed during the Korean War.
According to the Department of Defense, Cpl. Heilman was a member of Battery B, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. He was declared missing in action on Feb. 13, 1951 near Hoengsong, South Korea.
Cpl. Heilman’s name is recorded on the Courts of the Missing at the National Cemetery of the Pacific, along with other MIAs from the Korean War. He was accounted for on Aug. 19, 2016 and a rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate this.
He will be buried June 8, 2018 in Arlington National Cemetery.
Gov. Bevin encourages individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies to join in this tribute of lowering the flag in honor of Cpl. Heilman.
**When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
