For Alaska Only
Governor Bill Walker today ordered all United States and Alaska state flags be immediately lowered to half-staff in honor of Specialist Gabriel David Conde, 22, who was killed in combat yesterday in Afghanistan.
Specialist Conde has served in Alaska since April 2016. He was a member of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson’s 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. He joined the Army in August of 2015 in Loveland, Colorado, where his parents still live.
An army spokesperson said Conde was killed by enemy small-arms fire on a routine patrol.
“Specialist Conde’s service and sacrifice to his country is worthy of our highest respect,” Governor Walker said. “We express our deepest sympathies to his family, community, and brigade. Byron, Toni, Donna, and I are holding them in our prayers.”
Governor Walker ordered U.S. and Alaska flags be lowered to half-staff immediately. Flags should return to full-staff at sunset on Friday, May 4, 2018.
**When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
