For Michigan Only
Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags to be lowered to half-staff Tuesday, Feb. 27 within the state capitol complex in honor of former state legislator Burton Leland who passed away Sunday, Feb. 25.
“Burton was a dedicated legislator and I send my sincere condolences to his family, friends and community during this time,” Snyder said.
Leland served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1981-1998 and later the Michigan Senate from 1999-2006. In 2006 he was elected to the Wayne County Commission.
A service in his honor will take place Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. at Ira Kaufman Chapel located at 18325 W. Nine Mile Road in Southfield.
This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2013-10. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff. Flags should be returned to full staff on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
**When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
