Flag Repair Form
We just started an AMERICAN FLAG REPAIR PROGRAM which could save you thousands of dollars per year. If you order an American flag 15' x 25' or larger we will ship your order in a military grade duffel bag as shown below. There’s no charge for the duffel bag. (Any of our U.S. flags 15' x 25' or larger qualify, click here)

Here are the details:

The duffel bag is reusable and can be used to return the flags for repairs. We can usually make 2 or 3 wind damage repairs before the flag gets too short. Your savings is tremendous; for example, the cost of repairing a 20' x 30' American flag is typically around $60. Compared to purchasing new, that's a savings of $376. The larger the flag the bigger the savings.
By using a zippered duffel bag, instead of a box, it's easy for you to return the flag for repairs. It's also easy to store until needed versus a big box.
It a win-win for everyone! You save money on flags and we keep our sewing room busy while also reducing waste. Order online or call our office at 262-783-4800 ext. 14 (M-F, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM CST)

Average Cost of Repairs (not including shipping)

20’x30’ – $60
25’x40’ – $80
30’x50’ – $100

When to Return a Flag for Repair
Typically the upper fly corner is first to incur wind damage. This is the area that whips most. We recommend returning your flag for repairs as soon as wind damage exceeds beyond the first top red stripe.

Our Typical American Flag Repair
The flag does have to be shortened. The outer fly side of the flag is cut back to strong material. The new edge is folded and re-sewn in a fashion similar to the original flag, typically at least four rows of reinforcement stitching. Extra corner reinforcement can be added for an additional fee beginning at $32.00 and going up depending on flag size.

Turnaround Time
Typically you can expect one to two week turnaround time. This is dependent upon time of year, size of flag and amount of damage. You can call or e-mail our office for current approximate turnaround times.

Is It Proper to Repair an American Flag?
Yes, repairing and washing an American flag is not a violation of US Flag Code. Accepted practice allows the flag to be shortened until the overall fly dimension is at least twice the width of the star field (union). We would recommend replacing the flag before it gets that short but it is not uncommon to repair American flags at least once in order to extend the life.

Repairs to Other Flags
Yes, we do repair state, country, corporate flags and banners. Send us a photo and we will provide you with more details. kt@FlagsExpress.com

*Actual savings is dependent upon local conditions and flag damage when returned for repairs.

AFE Standards for when an American Flag Should Be Retired

On July 8, 2014 Mr. Redfield of Phoenix Arizona was concerned with a tattered flag in his community. He called our office , American Flags Express Inc. requesting guidelines as to when an American flag should be replaced. After a good amount of research, to our surprise the only standard we could find was:

When the flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display it should be destroyed in a dignified manner.

Obviously better guidelines are needed. So we began by reviewing thousands of American flags returned to our company for our recycling. American flags wear out in three different ways:

– Fading caused by UV exposure and precipitation
– Tearing or fraying typically starting on the upper fly corner due to wind and abrasion
– Grime caused by air pollution, dust and dirt

Our goal has been to develop simple rules that could be applied to all American flag sizes. After reviewing thousands of flags that have been returned to us for the purpose of recycling, we developed the following guidelines:

FRAYING – An American flag should be retired before fraying on-the-fly end approaches 1.25 times the height of the top red stripe

FADING – An American flag should be retired before the red or blue fades more than 20%

Military bases, public buildings, and prestige corporations will want to treat these guidelines as maximums and replace flags more often. It's important to keep in mind that once the flag begins to fray the damage travels quickly. It's better to replace or repair well before the guidelines above.

Repairing Flags

Rather than buying a new flag, you can have your flag repaired at a surprisingly low cost. Be sure to take it down at the first sign of any tear, this is to ensure we will have enough fabric to work with. If you are not sure if the flag is repairable, please email a photo of it to KT@FlagsExpress.com and we will reply within 24 hrs with a quote and turnaround time.

Pricing
For flags 3'x5' to 5'x8' the cost to repair is usually between $15 and $18.
For flags 6'x10' and up, cost to repair is normally the length x2. For example: 6' x 10' flag ---- Length = 10 ft ---- 10 x 2 = $20
Individual quotes can vary depending on if the canvas header needs repairing or if extra fabric needs to be added.
Shipping is paid by customer.

If you'd like to send your flag in for a repair, please mark the package "FLAG FOR REPAIR" and we will contact you with your invoice right away.

Tip: We offer the most weather resistant stitching materials and techniques, but any fabric in the wind will eventually break down. Many of our customers purchase two flags and fly one until the weather finally breaks the stitching. Send it in for repair and put up the second flag in the mean time. This is a great way to get the longest life out of your flag without having a bare flagpole.

Cleaning Flags

Occasionally washing your flag in warm detergent water will prevent pollutants and dirt from weakening the fabric. Always let your flag dry thoroughly before storing it to prevent mildew or color transfer.

How do I retire my flag?

Recycling is a great alternative. Burning American flags made of nylon (a petroleum product) creates hazardous gases and wastes resources. A new nylon recycling process has been discovered that converts virtually 100% of a nylon flag back into virgin grade nylon material which can be made into another new American flag. American Flags Express Inc. is supporting this effort.

Patriot Guard Displays

Patriot Guard customers subject our flags to some of the toughest conditions.
We recently received a gracious letter from a Patriot Guard member who loves our flags. He shared 3 important facts that will help extend the life of an American flag displayed on a motorcycle. The bottom line is smooth airflow over the flag surface will help reduce flag snap resulting in extended flag life. Laminar flow is important!

Wind Chart
This map shows the maximum steady wind expected at an elevation of thirty feet above ground level within a fifty year period of recurrence. Areas with the same maximum constant or steady wind speed are indicated. Because wind speeds are usually not constant, and gusts are involved, our website lists both flagged and unflagged maximum wind speeds with a constant wind speed and a 1.3 gust factor. WARNING: recommended flag sizes throughout our website do not represent a warranty that the flag size shown may be safely flown in all wind speeds. Personal injury, flagpole damage or property damage can occur when flying over-sized flags and banners or flying flags in higher winds than recommended. Flagpoles and their associated wind speeds listed assume that ten percent of the overall length of the flagpole is buried per or recommendations at or near ground level. Special engineering may be required for other applications such as wall or roof mounted flagpoles. Contact us for a prompt response regarding any situation that may require special engineering.
