For Alaska Only
September 15, 2017 ANCHORAGE - Governor Bill Walker today ordered all Alaska state flags be flown at half-staff in honor of former Alaska First Lady Ermalee Hickel. She passed away on Thursday, September 14 at the age of 92. The former first lady was married to former Governor Wally Hickel for 65 years until he passed in 2010.
"Alaska has lost a giant of history," Governor Walker said. "As Governor Hickel used to say, Ermalee Hickel was most beautiful as a butterfly, but tougher than a boot. Donna, Byron, Toni, and I give our sincerest condolences to the Hickel family, and join them and all Alaskans in mourning the loss of a truly phenomenal woman."
Governor Walker ordered that all Alaska flags be lowered to half-staff immediately. Flags should return to full staff at sunrise on Tuesday, September 19.
**When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
