In accordance with Executive Order 10-12, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from sun-up to sun-down on Tuesday, August 22 to honor former Kansas Senate President Paul “Bud” Burke who passed away on Thursday, August 16.
Burke, 83, served as Kansas Senate President from 1989 to 1997. The Republican from Leawood previously served as Senate Majority Leader from 1985 to 1988, and was a member of the Kansas House from 1973 to 1974.
“Bud Burke was committed to public service and loved this state deeply,” said Governor Brownback. “He had a great sense of humor and truly cared about the future of Kansas. Mary and I send our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.”
“I knew Bud and always appreciated his long-standing commitment to serving the people of the state he loved,” said Lt. Governor Dr. Jeff Colyer. “He will be remembered fondly, and we send our condolences to his family.”
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence. A celebration of Burke’s life will be held at the KU Endowment Association in Lawrence following the funeral services.
I hereby order that the flags shall be lowered at sunrise on Friday, August 18, 2017, and remain at half-staff until sunset.
