Half-Staff Alert for September 16, 2016
For Michigan Only

LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex and within the 106th District of the House of Representatives to be lowered to half-staff on Friday, Sept. 16 in recognition of state Rep. Peter Pettalia, who died Monday evening.

"The large number of condolences and fond memories of Peter coming from across the state show how much his commitment to public service was respected and how much he will be missed," Snyder said.

Pettalia was elected in Nov. 2010 to his first term in the Michigan House. He chaired the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and was vice chair of the Financial Services Committee. He was also a member of the Committee on Energy Policy and Tourism and Outdoor Recreation. He was re-elected to a third term for the 2015-16 Michigan Legislature.

He previously served as Presque Isle Township supervisor for 16 years as well as a volunteer firefighter for the East Grand Lake Fire Department for 15 years. Pettalia was an avid sportsman who supported outdoor recreation. He was a member of several Presque Isle and Alpena area organizations, and enjoyed spending time with his wife, two children and two granddaughters.

A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at the Presque Isle Lighthouse, 4500 E. Grand Lake Road in Presque Isle, during a celebration of life planned for noon to 5 p.m.

This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2013-10. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Saturday, Sept. 17.

When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
