Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. flags on all state buildings and within the state Capitol complex to be lowered to half-staff on Friday, May 8, in honor of Navy SEAL and Michigan native Brett Allen Marihugh. Marihugh died from complications following a training accident Sunday, April 26, 2015.

"Brett's passing is a reminder to all about the great sacrifices our servicemen and women make for us on a daily basis to ensure our safety and freedom," Snyder said. "We join Brett's family in mourning their loss and recognizing his selfless dedication to our state and nation."

Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Marihugh entered the Navy in December 2006, completing basic underwater demolition/SEAL training in Coronado, California in October 2007. He was a native of Livonia.

Prior to becoming a Navy SEAL, Marihugh served in the Marine Corps.from 1999-2003. Between his time with the Marines and the Navy, Marihugh worked as a deputy for the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

Marihugh received multiple awards during his time in the military, including the Bronze Star. A service honoring his life is scheduled for Saturday, May 9. He was 34 years old.
